Using our website
Our website has been built to be as accessible to as large a percentage of the population as possible, including those people with visual, auditory, motor or cognitive disabilities, and those using less common browsers, different types of computer and mobile devices.
Compliance with web standards
All web pages produced for this website are written to the XHTML 1.0 Transitional and HTML5 standard, use Cascading Style Sheets for presentation and we aim to meet the "AA" conformance level of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. This means it should be usable in all modern browsers, regardless of platform or device. We have used a popular and widely available assistive browsing application called Window-Eye to ensure the web site is usable by partially sighted users who may be using a screen reader. There are several different readers available, some of which are free to users.
Some older browsers do not fully comply with these web standards. A minority of our visitors still use these browsers (for example, Internet Explorer 6 and earlier) and as a result, will not experience the site as we have intended. They will be able to read the pages and navigate the site, but some pages may not display correctly and some functionality may not be available.
Using your browser to make pages easier to read
Users of Internet Explorer 7 and 8 can change the size of text on this web site by the ' Text Size' option from the 'Page' menu in your toolbar. You can then select from Largest, Larger, Medium, Smaller and Smallest settings (see image below).
Users of Internet Explorer 9 can increase and decrease the zoom level (which enlarges or shrinks all objects on the page) by holding down their CTRL key and pressing + to increase or - to decrease the zoom level. To return back to the default size hold down CTRL and press zero.
If you prefer, you can access the same options from settings (cog) menu icon on the toolbar (see below), and selecting the 'Zoom (100%)' option. You can then select to zoom in or out, or choose a specific zoom level.
Users of recent versions of Firefox can increase and decrease the zoom level (which enlarges or shrinks all objects on the page) by holding down their CTRL key and pressing + to increase or - to decrease the zoom level. To return back to the default size hold down CTRL and press zero.
In earlier versions that display a menu bar (or later versions if enabled), in addition to the keyboard method above, you can increase and decrease the zoom level via the 'View' menu (as below)
Users of Safari on the Mac can change the size of text on this web site by selecting View, Text Size and then select Increase, Decrease or Normal. If you prefer to use a keyboard short cut then click in the page, hold down OPTION and press + to increase font size or hold down OPTION and press - to decrease text size. To return the size of text to normal hold down OPTION and press zero.
How to use PDF files
This site uses 'portable document format' (PDF) files for some content. In order to view these documents you will need Adobe Reader software. This software is included on many systems but if it is not on yours you can go to the Adobe site and download the latest version for free.
