Can you spot the money story fake?

The world of money can often be a strange and surprising one.

In celebration of April Fool’s Day, we’ve rounded up five stories from across the money news. But which is the fake, and which really did happen?

You may be surprised by the answer…

April Fool’s Day headscratcher

  1. Pedestrians rushed into the roads in Dubai as hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of bank notes fell from the sky. The 500 UAE Dirham notes – worth roughly £88 each – were blown by heavy winds, although the locals reported that they did not know where they came from.
  2. An unemployed mechanic from Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria put himself on eBay with a starting price of 99p, hoping to be offered a job. Unfortunately he failed to attract any bids.
  3. Sir Philip Green sold BHS, the struggling retail firm, this year for just £1, 15 years after buying it for £200 million.
  4. A lady from Hull ended up with the highest level of compensation ever recorded from a supermarket to a customer after she found a dead rat in her box of cereal. The supermarket paid out a record £625,000.
  5. Villagers in China built a wall of banknotes worth £1.3m after a massive payout in annual bonuses from their rural co-operative. There was so much money it took two days to hand it all out.
