Media response: DWP plans to accelerate national rollout of Universal Credit from early next year

30 September 2014

Caroline Rookes, CEO of the Money Advice Service, comments:

“The Money Advice Service welcomes the announcement that DWP will put money and debt issues at the heart of Universal Credit as it rolls out to all Jobcentres and Local Authorities from early next year.

“We particularly support plans to engage with every household claiming Universal Credit to assess their financial capability, and refer to Personal Budgeting Support for advice where appropriate.

“We know that people on benefits are more likely than the total population to budget on a weekly, rather than a monthly basis which is how Universal Credit will be paid. Consequently many people moving onto Universal Credit may need to adjust their budgeting habits to manage a single monthly payment.

“The Money Advice Service looks forward to working closely with DWP to understand their plans in more detail.”
